Scholar-in-Residence

Hassan Vawda
Charleston, SC | Fall 2023

We are delighted to announce the addition of FSA Visionary Hassan Vawda to our upcoming Charleston residency program this fall. Hailing from London, Vawda currently serves as an Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Researcher at Tate and Goldsmiths. His research is centered around the intersection of religion and secularism within British art museums, encompassing areas such as audience engagement, art history, and curatorial approaches. Hassan also is an Officer on the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

During Vawda’s residency in Charleston, we aim to engage and explore the constellations of his research. Opening dialogues around the intersections of art museum practice and policy in relation to religion, belief and spirituality alongside his work in engaging communities across art and heritage in the public realm. He will dedicate his time in Charleston to speculating, mapping and mediating blueprints of spiritualities in relation to contemporary art and contemporary art institutions. What does a contemporary art museum that has embedded literacies of religion and belief, spiritualities and secularisms into its ecosystem look like? This will be the question that will be forging this residencies path.

We look forward to collaborating with Vawda and fostering an enriching environment that supports his valuable contributions to the residency program.
