Charleston Residencies

One of FSA’s core initiatives, the residency provides opportunities for artists to engage with spirituality in their own work and through engagement with a richly layered environment and welcoming community.

Our residency is a fully-funded award program based in Charleston, South Carolina. Home to a lively cultural scene and a remarkably well-preserved built environment, Charleston has borne witness to a complex and multilayered history dating from its founding in 1670. The city’s history was shaped by its Lowcountry geography which also provided it with an extraordinary cultural richness and natural beauty.

FSA welcomes artists from a wide variety of disciplines, in addition to curators and writers, who are engaged in projects relating to spirituality. Award recipients live and work for six weeks, in either the spring or fall, at our downtown Charleston property. Two beautifully designed residences with attached studios provide spaces where inspiration, reflection, and exploration can flourish.

We encourage those in residency to engage with the broader Charleston community. To that end, we facilitate access to, and interactions with, local arts, religious, and educational institutions.

We encourage those in residency to engage with the broader Charleston community. To that end, we facilitate access to, and interactions with, local arts, religious, and educational institutions. Past residents have worked with various congregations, art museums, archival collections, cultural interest groups, historic properties, and schools. During their residencies, artists also participate in FSA’s monthly reading salon, among other activities.

Our residency has had a wide impact locally.  “A thriving creative community can only be built by a chorus of diverse voices and viewpoints,” explains Katie Hirsh, Director of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston. Angela Mack, Director of Charleston’s Gibbes Museum of Art, adds: “You have accomplished such an inspiring and thoughtful artist residency…. Thank you for introducing our community to new ways of understanding and engaging with art.”

For our national and international audiences who follow us online, our documentation of the residency provides a constantly expanding portfolio of the ways different types of artists can fruitfully engage with spirituality in their own work and through public engagement.
